Lauren Himmelvo is an American screenwriter and director. Himmelvo wrote and directed the award-winning shorts Fault Line (2023) and the Tragedy of Samantha Biggle and the Twins (1998). Himmelvo’s films have screened all over the world, including the prestigious British Film Institute, São Paulo International Film Festival, Seattle International Film Festival, Mill Valley Film Festival, and WorldFest Houston International Film Festival where she won a prestigious “Remi Award” in 2023. She has produced and directed numerous films for the non-profit world, including California: State of the Arts (2001) hosted by Peter Coyote. Her early works were released on video through Wolfe Video, the largest exclusive distributor of LGBT films, and aired on television in Germany, France, Canada, Italy, and Israel.

In the late 1990s, Himmelvo apprenticed with film editor Tom Bullock at San Francisco’s Fire/Water Films. She was assistant editor on Joan Chen’s debut feature Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl. She holds a Master of Science degree in film from Boston University with a focus on directing. Out of film school, Himmelvo wrote and directed Treading Water (2001), a feature which screened at over fifty gay and lesbian film festivals in fourteen countries and won her the “Emerging Talent Award” at Outfest: Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. Over the years, Himmelvo has studied extensively with Judith Weston at her workshops for Actors and Directors in Los Angeles.

Himmelvo has attended the South By Southwest Film Conference and the Sundance Institute Producers Conference. She has chaired the Golden Gate Awards selection at the San Francisco International Film Festival and participated on the film selection committee. She worked with New York’s LIVE OUT LOUD, a non-profit speaker series dedicated to empowering gay youth.
